Chinese cops opt for Segways

Chinese authorities are going high-tech and have begun equipping elite crime fighting units with motorised Segway scooters.

According to the front page of daily newspaper The First, Chinese armed forces were recently spotted using Segways during a counter-terrorist exercise called "Taishan 2008". The exercise is thought to have taken place in Jinan, Shandong Province.

The idea might strike you as purely a publicity stunt, but Chinese cops could be taking a lead from police in Glen Falls, New York. Officers in the American state already use Segways whilst on duty and claim the machines help make cops more visible during patrols.

3G iPhone packs in US$100 of hardware - analyst

Apple's 3G iPhone costs just US$100 to make, it has been claimed. Yet Asian component makers are jumping for joy at the boost they expect the handset will make to their revenues.

The new iPhone's not even on sale yet, but US market watcher Portelligent has already totted up the cost of all the components - the bill of materials (BoM) - it believes the handset contains. It's guesstimate is US$100, EE Times reports.

That's just the cost of the bits, mind. On top of that, Apple has to fund development, marketing, software, assembly and so on, but even so, Portelligent's figure is less than half the US$280 that market watcher iSuppli estimated the 8GB 2.5G iPhone cost to make back in January 2007. After the handsets, launch Portelligent whittled that figure down to US$170, though that number likely applies to the now defunct 4GB model.

Apple will be selling the 8GB 3G iPhone for US$199, less to its operator customers, who may then discount further on the back of hefty monthly fees.

iPhone 3G officially announced. Available on July 11th

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has just unveiled the 3G iPhone, doubling the handset's talk time in the process - and halving the price.

Last year, Jobs said Apple wouldn't connect the iPhone to 3G networks because of the communications technology's battery demands. Apple's clearly licked the problem: the new iPhone is rated as capable of 5-6 hours' browsing on a 3G connection.

Jobs also promised five hours' 3G talk time, which is what the previous model could manage on GSM. The new one does ten hours on GSM, he claimed.

Media fans will get seven hours' video playback and 24 hours' continuous music listening.

But what about that 3G data connectivity? Is it any good? Jobs said the new handset can download an email attachment in a third of time time it took the previous model, which doesn't exactly suggest 1.8Mb/s let alone 7.2Mb/s. Yet Apple claimed the iPhone is indeed HSDPA-capable.

Still, it'll make for faster data when you're away from a Wi-Fi hotspot.

As expected, the new handset has GPS on board, which gives an accuracy injection to the handset's Google Maps app - and to tag snaps taken on the 2Mp camera. It also loses the original iPhone's insanely recessed headphone socket, so you can plug in a better set of phones than Apple's own without having to resort to a $20 accessory or a razor blade.

The price will be US$199 for the 8GB model and US$299 for the 16GB model.

Apple said the 3G iPhone will be rolling out in some 70 countries over the coming few months, with 22 nations getting it on 11 July. Jobs promised that wherever you buy the 8GB model, you won't pay more than the equivalent of US$199.

Apple patent filing suggests solar powered iPhone

The battery life of portable gadgets has always been a source of frustration. But Apple may have found an eco-friendly way around the problem – by integrating a solar panel behind, say, the iPhone's LCD display.

Apple has filed a patent application for the integration of a layer of solar cells below a gadget's LCD display. Essentially, sunlight passing across, say, the iPhone's screen could be soaked-up by the solar panel beneath the LCD and then turned into useable power for the phone.

The firm's "Solar cells on portable devices" patent application states that "solar cells embedded into the device then provide the electrical power to charge the batteries. The power generated from the solar cell can also directly power the operations of the device".

It’s not clear at this stage which devices Apple may consider using solar power for, although the iPhone would be an obvious guess because battery life on the phone has been panned since day one.

The patent also states that information about solar-power generation could be displayed on the device's main screen, allowing users to monitor the amount of mains-sourced power left versus the level of solar charge available.

Apple isn't the first manufacturer to consider integrating solar cells directly into gadgets though. In 2007, Motorola developed a screen allowing around 75 per cent of light to radiate through, meaning a solar cell could be placed behind to soak-up the light and turn it into useable power.

Handango newsletter reveals mid-September launch for XPERIA X1

While we're sure there's at least a few folks that'll be pleased to hear that Sony Ericsson's eagerly-anticipated XPERIA X1 will launch with Handango's InHand service on the device, we're guessing there's a tad more people that'll be interested in the other little detail revealed in the company's recent newsletter: that the X1 will apparently be launching in mid-September. Of course, we'll still have to wait to hear from Sony Ericsson to know for sure, especially given some of the launch date confusion in the past, but this latest word is at least in line with the company's most recent statement that the X1 launching in the second half of 2008, so it might not be such a crazy idea to start counting down the days.

Blu-ray-for-Xbox 360 rumours restoked

The Xbox 360 rumour mill is churning again thanks to fresh claims that the Microsoft has placed orders for consoles with Blu-ray Disc drives, allegedly in partnership with a subsidiary of PC manufacturer Asus.

According to a report on Taiwanese Chinese-language newssite UDN, Pegatron Technology will assemble Xbox 360s equipped with internal Blu-ray drives. It's claimed the first such models will roll off of the production line within six months, although where they'll go on sale first is anyone’s guess at this stage.

Microsoft has never really confirmed or denied that it's working on a Blu-ray Xbox 360. But the company has definitely denied that it's "in Blu-ray talks" with PlayStation 3 maker Sony.

Earlier this month, Microsoft also denied that it was working with Taiwanese optical drive manufacturer Lite-on to develop a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.

Unlocked iPhones help drive Apple Q2

Announcing its second quarter financial results today, Apple confirmed the obvious by saying a "significant" number of iPhones are being purchased from its outlets with the express intention of unlocking them. That trend, coupled with higher-than-expected demand, has resulted in inventory shortages, the company claimed.

COO Tim Cook refused to provide a precise figure on the number of unlocked phones, but put a positive spin on the hacks telling Wall Street investors that this is an indicator of worldwide interest in the iPhone.

Overall, Apple claimed 1.7m units sold, creating revenue of $378m from handsets, accessories and money from carriers. The company says it is on target to hit 10m iPhones sold this calendar year.

For the three months to 29 March, Apple reported $1.04bn in net income, an increase of 35.7 per cent, on $7.51bn revenue - up 42 per cent. Earnings per diluted share came in at $1.16, compared to $0.87 for the year-ago quarter.

It was the Mac that propelled Apple towards one of its best quarters in terms of revenue. Apple shipped 2.28m Macs, representing 51 per cent unit and 54 per cent revenue growth over last year, and 10.64m iPods, a one per cent unit growth and eight per cent revenue growth.

Apple hailed strong interest from developers in business and academia for its iPhone development programme. One third of Fortune 500 companies and 400 higher-education institutions have joined the iPhone app effort, Apple told investors.

Separately, Apple declined to comment on its reason for the $278m purchase of PowerPC chip designer PA Semi, saying only that it buys small companies from time to time.

Leaked picture points to upcoming HTC phones

It's aid that a picture says a thousand words. We wish that was literally the case now an image has surfaced of several handsets claimed to be in development in phone maker HTC's labs.

Most of the handsets in the pic aren't new. Along the top row, from right to left, you'll see the Touch, Touch Cruise and TyTN II. The phone second from the left on the bottom row looks like the P3470, which HTC unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February.

But the two handsets on the bottom right are a mystery, as is the slider phone shown in the bottom left. The two bottom-right devices look extremely similar and have near-identical blue pads, although the layout of the keys appears slightly different on each.

The slider handset also looks very similar to the other two phones, aside from the fact that there's a full Qwerty keyboard hidden underneath the screen. The slider phone's outer keypad still looks very similar to the keypad used on the two other devices, which could mean all three phones are in fact the same unit - just each with trial faceplates.

All three phones have similar size displays too, while the phone in the bottom right may also have a user-facing camera for video calls.
